23rd of November

Here are some photos of what we did today in class.
You can see the play that's happening in Room 1. There were opportunities for students to incorporate their writing and reading skills into their play.
You can also see how in Room 1 we help each other out with the Tricky words in our Buddy Reading Time.

Print Making

This week we've been making prints in class with foam.
First we had to sketch what our prints will look like. Then we created our prints on the foam by making marks on it with a pencil. After Miss Liu showed us how to print using the rolling pin and the ink we had a go ourselves. We did two prints on white paper using the yellow ink. Once it was dried (overnight) we did another two prints with blue ink - one on orange paper (because blue and orange are complimentary colours) and one on top of our yellow print.
Here are the photos that Miss Liu managed to take.

21st November

What an awesome day we had today.
All the children in Room 1 loves their play. Today we had a big doll house that the children constructed together. We also had a few super heroes flying around creating lego things. We also had a family in the classroom.
Outside the classroom, in our Creative Construction Area the children in the junior school have created 'The Base'. It has secret doors and furniture. Everyone who wants to be living in the base gets a job (e.g., dusting, cooking, looking out for bad guys with binoculars, cleaning...etc the list goes on).
Here are some of the photos I manage to take today.

Making Patterns

Last Wednesday we talked about patterns in Room 1. Here are some of the patterns that we made with the materials that we found around the classroom. Check out our patterns!

Buddy Reading

In the last couple of weeks we started having a buddy reading session where Miss Liu assigns every student to a buddy to read to and to listen.

The students in Room 1 have really enjoyed it and are becoming really good at helping each other out when they are stuck on a word.

Here are some photos from our buddy reading sessions

Room 1 Making Playdough

Today we made Playdough in class. It was super fun.
The dough was really sticky at first. The more flour we added the less sticky it got. We had to knead the playdough over and over again to get the right texture.
Here are some photos that the students took during playdough making.

Term 3 Week 5 Friday

On Friday we did some printing with potatos and apples. At the same time some of the students in Room 1 created some monsters/creatures/man using craft and wrote about it on the iPads with Explain Everything. In the afternoon while the sun was still out the whole junior syndicate went outside and played. The teachers got the sports equipment and dress up luggage out.

Check out the photos that were taken on Friday.

Train and Ferry Trip to Devonport

Today the junior school walked all the way to the GI train station and caught a train to Britomart. Then we caught the ferry to Devonport to look around the Auckland landscape.
It was many people's first trip on the train and/or the ferry and it was very exciting.
The children (and adults) were very exhausted at the end of the day.
Here are some photos from our trip.

End of Term 2 Play

After attending the play based learning Professional Development I was eager to test out the idea in my class. Have a look at what the students in Room 1 got up to during their free play time.

Play

This term I will be focusing on developing a classroom programme where play is incorporated daily. After attending a professional development course on the importance of play I was inspired by the many great benefits that play has on children’s academic, emotional and social development.
I have made an information sheet for everyone about the importance of play.

Friday Fun Day Art - Blowing Dye Bubbles

On Friday Miss Liu mixed some coloured dye and dish washing liquid together. We got to choose two colours and used a straw to create bubbles. We had a lot of fun and some of us ended up with messy dyed hands.

Planting Kumara

On Friday we planted some Kumara in our garden.
First we had to pull all the weeds out of the garden and the used the rake to soften the soil. Then we dug some holes and planted the sprouting Kumara.

Te-Wai-O Taiki Nature Reserve Trip

This term our inquiry is Rodents and Streams.
Last week we walked all the way to Te-Wai-O Taiki Reserve from school to look at our community environment. We saw a lot of animals and even got to use a water filter tube to see how clean the water is from the duck pond and the water in the sea.

Here's a video of the photos I took on our Te-Wai-O Taiki Nature Reserve Trip.
